Gordon Dunne MLA with Paul Getty (Heatherlea Bakery) and Roger Pollen (FSB NI Head of External Affairs)

North Down DUP MLA Gordon Dunne has pledged his support to 'Small Business Saturday' taking place on Saturday 2nd December 2017. The MLA visited the Heatherlea Bakery in Bangor and met with the owner Paul Getty along with Roger Pollen from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) NI. Speaking after the visit, Mr Dunne added:

‘I am delighted to lend my support to the ‘Small Business Saturday’ campaign in Northern Ireland. It is essential that we do all we can to support and encourage economic activity for our local small businesses who are the backbone of our local economy.

Our small businesses such as the Heatherlea Bakery in Bangor are a real credit to our local areas and are key to the future of our town centres, not only do they provide so many valuable jobs, they also stimulate and sustain our towns. Independent traders have been the life-blood of our communities for many years, especially during the darkest years of the troubles when out of town shopping centres were a rarity. People must be encouraged to shop locally not just at Christmas, but throughout the year.

Our town centres continue to face a range of challenges but they continue to provide excellent value, choice and goods for people locally and often have to compete with the challenge and competition of online shopping as well as competing with large out of town shopping centres. Any attempts to help grow and rejuvenate our town centres are to be welcomed, encouraged and embraced and I am delighted to support this campaign encouraging local business.'
