North Down DUP MLA Gordon Dunne has welcomed the action taken by Transport NI to get new lights erected in and around the Springhill Flyover in Bangor and a section of the A2 Dual Carriageway. The MLA added:

'I am delighted that action has now been taken to erect new lights in and around the very busy Springhill flyover in Bangor. This is a very busy junction with traffic and pedestrians using this area throughout the day and night and I had become concerned about the poor lighting provision within this area particularly as there are many pedestrians who walk within this area from their homes, and to and from the nearby shopping centre and the town centre.

I held a meeting with a number of senior Transport NI engineers and highlighted the need for some light on this issue as a matter of priority. I am glad that the new lighting columns have now been erected within this junction and I look forward to full completion in the near future. There are also plans from Transport NI to remove the large existing lighting towers at the flyover.

I am also pleased that Transport NI have indicated to me that there will be a £1million investment in new lighting which will run from this Springhill junction right through to Ballyrobert along the A2, this was confirmed to me during a recent meeting I organised with Simon
Richardson, the Transport NI Divisional Roads Manager who clarified that the scheme has got the green light.

This should make a real difference to both road safety and the general amenity of the local area. The A2 is one of Northern Irelands' busiest roads and it is imperative that every effort is made to ensure the road is as safe as possible for all road users including pedestrians and cyclists who use this route on a daily basis.

The existing system has proved defective with regular faults occurring which have resulted in outages of lights on sections along the A2 particularly over winter periods when outages are most noticeable and dangerous.'
